musica intima is thrilled to invite you to mâmowintowin, our season finale, featuring special guest artists Andrew Balfour and Sherryl Sewepagaham.
The word mâmowintowin means 'a gathering' in Cree, and this concert is an invitation to come together through music, story, and shared experience. musica intima is deeply honoured to work with Andrew and Sherryl to create this gathering of Indigenous and European musical traditions, past and present, artists and communities, and the many stories carried through song.
At the heart of the evening is the West Coast world premiere of Andrew Balfour’s Missa Tekakwitha: The Seven Stones of Grandfather’s Prophecies, a profound seven-movement work sung in Mohawk, French, and Latin. This landmark composition continues our meaningful artistic collaboration with Andrew, following Nagamo, our JUNO-nominated and Western Canadian Music Award-winning project. The new piece honours the life and memory of Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, the 'Lily of the Mohawks', who was the first North American Indigenous woman to be canonized as a saint. Missa Tekakwitha is a powerful meditation on spirituality, identity, and the complex meeting of cultures through music.
musica intima is also very excited to share the music of Cree-Dene educator and composer Sherryl Sewepagaham. Her work has become a cornerstone of Musica Printima, our publishing arm, and this concert includes pieces that audiences have come to love, alongside new additions to her KISÎWÎPÊHKAHAM - Music of Sherryl Sewepagaham series.

These works reflect the breadth and intimacy of Sherryl’s musical voice that span the natural world, family life, and the everyday moments that shape them.
