Exhibition of recent works by contemporary Norwich artist Sophia Shuvalova.
The exhibition explores Classical, Folk and New Mythologies with Old Masters techniques and contemporary approaches, weaving them into local narratives. The series on wood combines organic serendipitous elements and raw material juxtaposed with academic drawing, oil painting and classical imagery. The works explore mythologies from a multilevel perspective, concerned both with the myths’ origin and their evolution. Examining archetypes as the foundation of our society, the artworks position examples of what New Mythologies such as memes, urban legends and game lore for example, alongside Classical and Folk Mythologies appropriated into contemporary narratives. In this instance Mythology itself becomes a language through which both contemporary culture and the human condition can be examined.
