About this Event

The Mysteries to Die For Book Club is led by Elsie Souza, reading M**der, mayhem, and marvelous prose. From Nordic noir to British whodunits, each book reveals how crime and storytelling cross borders, and what our favorite detectives can teach us about culture, justice, and the human heart. June's selection brings us deeper into the dark, atmospheric world of Scandinavian crime fiction with one of its most compelling and troubled detectives: Harry Hole.
This month, we're reading The Redbreast by Jo Nesbøa riveting installment in the internationally acclaimed Harry Hole series. When a rare rifle surfaces in Oslo, Detective Hole begins to uncover a conspiracy that stretches back to World War II and the lingering shadows of Norway’s past. Moving between present-day investigations and wartime betrayals, Nesbø weaves a complex, high-stakes narrative of espionage, extremism, and revenge. With its intricate plotting and psychological depth, The Redbreast is a masterclass in tension—and a powerful exploration of how history refuses to stay buried.
We will meet in person at our store location at The Mark, 117 S. Pineapple Ave. The book club is $13.59, which includes a copy of The Redbreast to be picked up at Bookstore1 any time before our meeting. Themed refreshments will be served!

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Detective Harry Hole embarrassed the force, and for his sins he's been reassigned to mundane surveillance tasks. But while monitoring neo-Nazi activities in Oslo, Hole is inadvertently drawn into a mystery with deep roots in Norway's dark past—when members of the nation's government willingly collaborated with Nazi Germany.

More than sixty years later, this black mark won't wash away, and disgraced old soldiers who once survived a brutal Russian winter are being murdered, one by one. Now, with only a stained and guilty conscience to guide him, an angry, alcoholic, error-prone policeman must make his way safely past the traps and mirrors of a twisted criminal mind. For a hideous conspiracy is rapidly taking shape around Hole—and Norway's darkest hour may still be to come.
