Join Elsie Souza for an international reading journey through the world's most captivating mysteries, from Nordic noir to British whodunits.
About this Event

The Mysteries to Die For Book Club is led by Elsie Souza, reading M**der, mayhem, and marvelous prose. April's selection is the last stop in our four-month international reading journey through the world's most captivating mysteries. From Nordic noir to British whodunits, each book reveals how crime and storytelling cross borders, and what our favorite detectives can teach us about culture, justice, and the human heart.
This month, we're reading Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier - the haunting, gothic masterpiece that begins with one of literature’s most famous lines: “Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again.” When a shy young bride arrives at her husband’s grand estate, she finds herself living in the shadow of his first wife, whose presence lingers in every corner. Blending romance, mystery, and psychological suspense, du Maurier’s novel is a chilling study of jealousy, identity, and the ghosts that refuse to stay buried.
We will meet in person at our store location at The Mark, 117 S. Pineapple Ave. The book club is $13.95, which includes a copy of Rebecca to be picked up at Bookstore1 any time before our meeting. Themed refreshments will be served!

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Sixty years after Rebecca was first published, Daphne du Maurier's unsurpassed masterpiece continues to enthrall readers with romance and suspense, as the second Mrs. de Winter narrates the haunting events surrounding her marriage to Maxim de Winter and her growing obsession with his first wife, the beautiful, now dead Rebecca. Includes excerpts from the author's personal notes and essays, exclusive to this edition.

PRAISE FOR THE BOOK:

National Book Award Winner, 1938

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

DAPHNE DU MAURIER, Lady Browning,(13 May 1907 - 19 April 1989) was an English novelist, biographer, and playwright. Her parents were actor-manager Sir Gerald du Maurier and his wife, actress Muriel Beaumont. Her grandfather, George du Maurier, was a writer and cartoonist.

Although du Maurier is classed as a romantic novelist, her stories have been described as "moody and resonant" with overtones of the paranormal. Her bestselling works were not at first taken seriously by critics, but have since earned an enduring reputation for narrative craft. Many have been successfully adapted into films, including the novels Rebecca, Frenchman's Creek, My Cousin Rachel, and Jamaica Inn, and the short stories "The Birds" and "Don't Look Now." Du Maurier spent much of her life in Cornwall, where most of her works are set. As her fame increased, she became more reclusive.
