Learn about mycelium-based materials in this workshop with bioengineering basics, project insights, and hands-on composite creation! One of the biggest challenges in contemporary design is finding alternatives to fossil-based, polluting materials. Mycelium, the vegetative structure of fungi, is a promising solution due to its many beneficial properties. The growth behavior of mycelium allows for versatile shaping and results in materials with advantageous properties. By varying growth conditions and substrates, mycelium can produce a wide range of materials suitable for use in construction, product design and textiles. In addition, the production of mycelium-based materials is less energy-intensive and the materials are biodegradable, thus becoming an environmentally friendly material alternative.
The Mycelium introductory workshop aims to introduce participants to the key terms of bioengineering and mycelium-based materials. The workshop will be divided into two main parts: the first will focus on theoretical knowledge, covering basic definitions of the field and presenting relevant projects. The second part will offer hands-on experience, where participants will learn about the growth process of mycelium composites by preparing material samples using different organic waste materials.

WORKSHOP LEAD
Dóra Márföldi, a 2020 textile design graduate, co-founded Szimbio Lab, focusing on sustainable biomaterials, especially mycelium. She is currently pursuing doctoral studies at the University of Pécs and, in 2023, received the Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt MOE fellowship for materials research at RWTH Aachen and TU Dresden.
