Up Here 11 caps off its Next Up series of free happy hour shows with the culmination of Up Here’s inaugural Artist in Residency—a space for wild collaboration, deep experimentation, and new creation.
In a spirit of ceremony, intuition, and invention, poet and multidisciplinary artist Connor Lafortune (Dokis First Nation), sonic alchemist Mustafa Rafiq (Edmonton), and sound/light sculptor Emilio Portal (Sudbury) co-create a brand new performance that blends music, poetry, and improvisation—presented for the first and only time at Up Here 11.
The Next Up series features emerging talent in an inviting, intimate setting between 5 and 7 pm!
MUSTAFA RAFIQ
Mustafa Rafiq is a person and self-taught guitarist and saxophonist. Using these instruments with voice, field recordings and sound collage percussion he researches relationships among blackness, nature, divinity, sound and time.
EMILIO PORTAL
Emilio Portal is a multidisciplinary artist of French-Irish-Peruvian heritage whose work with sound, light, and installation explores decolonialism, spiritual ecology, and the unknown. His projects have been presented across Canada and internationally, with recent works like eau bénite and Magnetism featuring deep collaborations with Northern Ontario artists. Based in Sudbury, he also works at the McEwen School of Architecture, where he continues to blend the experimental with the elemental.
CONNOR LAFORTUNE
Connor Lafortune writes, stitches, and sings toward healing. A queer Anishinaabek artist blending poetry, music, and beadwork, his work transforms pain into beauty and resistance into ceremony—an ode to Anishinaabek.

Guitare. Sax. Spirituel. L’autodidacte Mustafa Rafiq tisse la ligne du temps par le souffle, la mémoire et le divin. Ses collages lo-fi traversent le sombre, la nature et l’inimaginable.
EMILIO PORTAL
Emilio Portal est un artiste multidisciplinaire d’origine françaises, irlandaises et peruviennes qui travaille le son et la lumière afin de déconstruire les perspectives coloniales. Ses projets intègrent l’indéterminé, la contemplation, l’animisme et l’écologisme et ont été présentés à travers le Canada et l’international. Ses récentes oeuvres Eau bénite et Magnetism mettent de l’avant ses collaborateurs nord-ontariens. Il travaille aussi à l’École d’architecture McEwan où il encourage la rencontre entre l’expérimental et l’élémental.
CONNOR LAFORTUNE
Connor Lafortune écrit, coud et chante la guérison. Artiste anichinabé queer, sa poésie, sa musique et son perlage transforment la douleur en beauté; la résistance en cérémonie et est une ode aux Anichinabés.
