About this Event
“Muslim Journal: Its Evolution and Contributions to Islam in America and the World” is an enlightening community forum that explores the powerful role of the press in shaping faith, identity, and justice. Join us for an afternoon with Professor Ayesha K. Mustafaa, the longtime Editor-in-Chief of The Muslim Journal, as she reflects on over six decades of African American Muslim journalism — from Muhammad Speaks, founded by Malcolm X, to The Muslim Journal’s continuing legacy of truth-telling, education, and advocacy.
For more than 30 years, Professor Mustafaa has carried forward the vision of a free press grounded in faith and civic responsibility, using journalism to document the evolution of Islam in America and amplify stories that unite communities across the globe. She will share insights on how The Muslim Journal connects to the broader history of African American journalism — tracing the lineage from Freedom’s Journal and The North Star to The Chicago Defender, The Pittsburgh Courier, and today’s Muslim voices for justice and equity.
This program is more than a lecture — it is a living conversation about legacy, leadership, and the next generation of storytellers who will continue to shape the narrative of Islam in America.
