Format 3 est un projet en cours des artistes danoises Louise Foo et Martha Skou (FOO/SKOU) qui explore comment le son peut être expérimenté à travers des supports visuels, physiques et virtuels.
Au centre de l’œuvre se trouve une partition graphique composée de quatre-vingt-un symboles formant un alphabet musical. Grâce à une application personnalisée et des interfaces spatiales, les visiteurs peuvent activer les formes pour déclencher des sons, des échantillons et des synthèses, transformant la notation visuelle en un environnement sonore interactif. L’œuvre s’inspire des traditions de la musique expérimentale et de la notation graphique tout en les étendant à des formes spatiales, tactiles et contemporaines.
Lors de cette performance live, Foo et Skou s’appuient sur leur connaissance intime de l’alphabet Format 3, exposé dans le cadre de l’exposition, pour créer un paysage sonore improvisé de 15 minutes. À l’aide de symboles découpés, d’une caméra en direct et de logiciels personnalisés servant d’interfaces musicales, les artistes collaborent pour activer sons, échantillons et synthèse en temps réel, tout en projetant la partition visuelle sur le mur, créant une expérience synesthétique. La performance transforme les symboles graphiques en un environnement musical dynamique, permettant au public de percevoir le son comme un matériau visuel, tactile et performatif.

Format 3 is an ongoing body of work by Danish artists Louise Foo and Martha Skou (FOO/SKOU) that explores how sound can be experienced across visual, physical, and virtual material.
At the center of the work is a graphic score composed of eighty-one symbols forming a musical alphabet. Using a custom app and spatial interfaces, visitors can activate the shapes to trigger tones, samples, and synthesis, transforming visual notation into a playable sound environment. The work draws on traditions of experimental music and graphic notation while extending them into spatial, tactile, and contemporary forms.
In this live performance, Foo and Skou draw on their intimate knowledge of the Format 3 alphabet, exhibited in relation to the exhibition, to create an improvised 15-minute soundscape. Using cut-out symbols, a live camera, and custom software as musical interfaces, the artists collaborate to activate tones, samples, and synthesis in real time, while projecting the visual score onto the wall, creating a synaesthetic experience. The performance transforms the graphic symbols into a dynamic musical environment, allowing audiences to experience sound as a visual, tactile, and performative material.

Format 3 ist ein fortlaufendes Werk der dänischen Künstlerinnen Louise Foo und Martha Skou (FOO/SKOU), das untersucht, wie Klang über visuelle, physische und virtuelle Medien erfahrbar wird.
Im Zentrum des Werks steht eine grafische Partitur aus einundachtzig Symbolen, die ein musikalisches Alphabet bilden. Mithilfe einer speziell entwickelten App und räumlicher Schnittstellen können Besucher:innen die Symbole aktivieren, um Töne, Samples und Syntheseprozesse auszulösen, wodurch die visuelle Notation in eine spielbare Klangumgebung verwandelt wird. Das Werk greift auf Traditionen experimenteller Musik und grafischer Notation zurück und erweitert sie in räumliche, haptische und zeitgenössische Formen.
