MUSIC APPRECIATION: BLUES & SEA SHANTIES, A CRESCENDO CAMP
w/ Nick Veine of Music Sparks Meaning
This three-day music appreciation camp offers an immersive experience into the world of blues and sea shanties.
Tuesday: Blues Roots
We'll focuses on the rich history of the blues, exploring its geographical, historical, and cultural roots, and highlighting its significance as a folk art form in American music. Campers will listen to influential blues artists from the Mississippi Delta and Chicago, gaining an understanding of the genre's evolution. In the afternoon, students will be introduced to the 12-bar blues structure and begin hands-on exploration of instruments like ukuleles, guitars, and banjos, and start crafting their own blues lyrics and melodies.
Wednesday: Blues and Sea Shanties Development
We'll build upon the foundation laid on day one, with campers continuing to develop their original blues songs, working individually or in small groups, and receiving instruction on basic chord progressions and song structure. The afternoon shifts to sea shanties, exploring their history and purpose, analyzing traditional structures and themes, and initiating the process of writing new lyrics to existing shanty melodies. Students will also engage in hands-on practice with instruments, focusing on rhythms and melodies suited for sea shanties.
Thursday: Performance Day
Today will culminate in a performance! The morning is dedicated to final rehearsals for both blues songs and sea shanties, along with stage preparation and sound checks, and practicing performance etiquette. At 11:30 AM, students will showcase their original blues songs and newly adapted sea shanties for an audience of fellow campers, friends, and family. Throughout the camp, students will have access to a variety of hand percussion instruments, ukuleles, guitars, and banjos, and Nick Veine will provide guidance and support, fostering a fun and creative learning environment.
