Music of the Djembe Workshop in Muldersdrift - 12 December 2026

Hi
In 1993 I learnt my first Djembe rhythms/patterns. At that time, I didn’t own a Djembe but practiced those rhythms every day on a borrowed Namibian drum. I would often dream about playing drums with a large group of drummers, playing layered and arranged drum music. This is my passion when it comes to percussion. Between 2004 and 2009 I had the privilege of playing in just such a group called Se:kei;denz, a group that ranged in size over the years from 5 to 14 members. It epitomised the essence of complex arranged drum music.
It is in this spirit that I will be running a full day Drum/Djembe Music Workshop on 12 December 2026. This workshop will also serve as a precursor to a class that I intend to start in 2027, a class that is focussed on arranged drum music.
The workshop will cover drum music arrangements within a light-hearted and joy-filled atmosphere. I will teach a couple of multipart ensembles in their entirety, including the Djembe, Bass, Agogo Bell, Shakers and even possibly the Songs. Multipart ensembles layer several percussion patterns in a way that creates a multi-faceted form of sacred geometry.
“One of the most powerful aspects of drumming and the reason people have done it since the beginning of being human is that it changes people’s consciousness. Through rhythmic repetition of ritual sounds, the body, the brain and the nervous system are energized and transformed. When a group of people play a rhythm for an extended period of time, their brain waves become entrained to the rhythm and they have a shared brain wave state. The longer the drumming goes on, the more powerful the entrainment becomes. It’s really the oldest holy communion.” Layne Redmond
Workshop details:
- Date: Saturday 12 December 2026
- Time and duration: 9am until 4pm with an hour lunch break.
- Venue: Plot 28 Clinic Road, Driefontein, Muldersdrift.
- Fee: R950 per person.
- Booking is essential. Please book via WhatsApp on 084 370 8813.
- You will need a Djembe, your own or borrowed along with your percussion instruments.
This workshop will showcase the magic and joy that comes from the multi-dimensionality of drum music. I hope to see you there.
