About this Event
Join us for an extraordinary spring concert and landmark evening marking the final major concert of Canon Dr. Craig Phillips, who has served as All Saints' Director of Music for over 38 years.
This special evening coincides with the American Guild of Organists Gala, at which Dr. Phillips will be honored with the Distinguished Artist Award for 2026 — a testament to a legacy that has shaped the musical life of this parish and the broader choral and organ world for nearly four decades.
The program opens with Dr. Phillips' own Sojourn for Organ and Winds (2009), commissioned for the 2010 National Convention of the American Guild of Organists in Washington, D.C. Scored for organ and wind quartet — oboe, clarinet, French horn, and bassoon — the work is richly cinematic in character, moving from quasi-minimalistic outer sections to lush, lyrical writing at its heart.
Ralph Vaughan Williams' An Oxford Elegy (1949), for speaker, chorus, and chamber orchestra, follows — a refulgent and quietly nostalgic work drawn from two elegiac poems by Matthew Arnold, "The Scholar Gypsy" and "Thyrsis." A parable of idealism in the face of loss, it is conducted by Byron Adams and narrated by Alasdair Shaikh.
The evening's centerpiece is Maurice Duruflé's Requiem, Op. 9 — one of the towering masterworks of the twentieth century. Rooted in the timeless beauty of Gregorian chant and composed during the Nazi Occupation of Paris, the Requiem is, in Duruflé's own words, a reflection of "the agony of man faced with the mystery of his ultimate end." Searing, deeply moving, and lapidary in its perfection, it is a work that speaks directly to the human soul. Soloists include mezzo-soprano Meagan Martin, baritone Victor Mazzone, and bass/baritone Ian Schipper, with Douglas Leightenheimer at the organ.
This is a concert — and an occasion — that will not come again.
All are welcome to join us for a wonderful evening of music followed by a reception!
