Are You Ready? Why Nu Metal and Alternative Don’t SuckPut your caps on backwards, grab your baggy pants, pull those old Linkin Park posters out of the closet, recall the lyrics to Bring Me to Life, and pick your favorite Slipknot mask - we’re heading back to the 2000s.
What will we talk about?
• How did nu metal emerge? What kind of genre is it really?
• Why are nu metal and rapcore far more progressive and interesting than they seem?
• What do we owe to Korn, Linkin Park, and Deftones?
• How did alternative music make its way to the post-Soviet space - and why are Amatory and Psychea so important?
• Why did critics hate nu metal so much - and why were their arguments total bullshit?
• How did 2000s alternative become relevant again?
Nikolay Ovchinnikov - a journalist best known as an editor at Wave of Latvia. He writes extensively about music and has been published in Delfi, Republic, Novaya Gazeta Europe, and other outlets. From 2019 to 2022, he headed the Music section at the influential Russian-language media Afisha Daily. Nikolay also runs his Telegram channel Voice.
And most importantly - his upcoming book We Will Never Die, about the history of 2000s Russian alternative rock, is set to be released at the end of the year. This talk serves as a kind of preface to it.
