AN AFTERNOON OF PEACEMusic for Comfort and Consolation
Featuring Duruflé’s REQUIEM
Miriam Schildkret, mezzo-soprano
Zachary Golden, organ
and “Cantique de Jean Racine” by Fauré
“Like as the hart” by Howells
Ancient prayers. Floating harmonies. A quiet kind of light.
An afternoon of choral music that offers rest for the soul.
In our noisy and anxious world,
this concert offers a rare hour of calm.
Gabriel Fauré wrote music of extraordinary gentleness and clarity. "Cantique de Jean Racine," composed
in 1865 when he was just 19 years old, offers a foretaste of the melodic beauty and shimmering elegance of his mature works.
The pieces by Howells and Duruflé come from another fraught moment in human history: they span World War II.
Herbert Howells wrote deeply personal, searching music—tender and spacious. “Like as the hart” was written on January 8, 1941, just months after the London blitz. This psalm of anguish and longing is widely considered a cornerstone of 20 th -century English church music.
Maurice Duruflé was a perfectionist who spent years crafting a Requiem in honor of his father. Though the work was commissioned in 1941, he did not complete it until 1947. The glowing, lyrical music feels like light shining through stained glass.
