On Saturday, May 20, 2023, Charles Lynch suffered a sudden brain hemorrhage caused by a congenital condition known as an AVM (arteriovenous malformation). He collapsed at home and was rushed to the hospital, where he was placed on life support for nearly a week.
Thankfully, Charles is now conscious, but his recovery journey is just beginning. Over the next 2–3 weeks, his brain will continue to drain, and after that, he’ll face the long and difficult road of rebuilding both his cognitive and physical strength.
Doctors expect that Charles will be out of work for several months as he focuses on healing. The emotional, physical, and financial toll is significant, and we’re doing all we can to support him during this critical time.

May 20, 2023, marks two years since Charles suffered his brain injury.
In that time, he’s made tremendous progress, though he’s still not quite back to the person he was before. Physically, he’s doing well, aside from getting tired more easily than he used to; he’s in good shape.
Cognitively, however, he continues to face challenges. Charles still experiences delayed processing and reaction times, as well as ongoing struggles with short-term memory and recall. Due to these cognitive deficits, he’s unable to drive and still requires 24-hour supervision.
My ex-husband and my daughter do their best to keep him engaged with simple projects throughout the day. He needs step-by-step instructions and close supervision, but he’s often able to complete tasks on his own. Other times, we need to step in and help, but keeping him busy gives him purpose, and we’re grateful for that.
We recently received some good news: Charles has been approved for disability benefits and is now eligible to access his pension early, as the state has officially deemed him disabled. Financially, this has helped ease some of the burden. My daughter also returned to work after 18 years as a stay-at-home mom, and she enrolled their son back into traditional school. It’s been a season of big changes, but slowly, things are stabilizing.
His latest MRI, done in May 2024, showed promising results. The Gamma Knife radiation is working — the AVM is shrinking, and blood flow to the area has decreased. His neurosurgeon confirmed that Charles is responding well to treatment. That said, we were reminded that potential side effects from radiation can still occur up to 18–24 months post-treatment. So, while we’re encouraged, we remain cautiously optimistic. Fortunately, the only side effect so far has been mild facial swelling for a few days following treatment. His next MRI is scheduled for June 5th.
