Join us for a thrilling six-week exploration of early twentieth-century soundscapes in Masterpieces of Modern Music: Engaging a New World of Sound and Meaning. Led by musicologist and organist Mark Hall, this Wednesday evening series dives into the bold and brilliant masterpieces that redefined music from 1900 through the 1960s.
From Stravinsky’s riot-inducing Rite of Spring to Bartók’s intense String Quartet No. 4, from Ives’s kaleidoscopic Three Places in New England to the transcendent beauty of Messiaen’s Quartet for the End of Time—modern music isn’t beyond you. It’s waiting to be heard, and you’re more ready than you think!
No musical background is required—just an open mind. Each week combines accessible commentary, high-quality recordings, and group discussion to illuminate how composers shattered old rules and invented new musical languages in the early 20th century.
