Music & Poetry: Rara Avis & Joel Burdess
About this Event
Based in Casper, Rara Avis is a chamber ensemble dedicated to bringing an eclectic blend of Baroque to contemporary music to concert stages and community spaces. The flexible, highly portable group was originally formed in 2015 to support the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra’s “Music on the Move” initiative. Founded by the late Richard Turner—a revered local musician and the symphony’s long-time principal bassoonist—the ensemble currently features Delores Thornton, Kathy Williams, Charlotte Gruner, and Heather Malody. Celebrated for its community-centric mission, Rara Avis regularly performs for ARTCORE, the Casper Chamber Music Society, Natrona County schools, and the WSO’s “Music for Health” program.
Joel Burdess, MA, MS, is a Wyoming writer, visual artist, musician, and educator. His work has appeared in The Wyoming Fences Anthology and South Dakota Review, and he is the recipient of the Goodstein Library Prize and a Wyoming Arts Council Writing Fellowship in Creative Nonfiction.
Joel has presented research at multiple International Hemingway Society Biennial Conferences and continues to explore the connections between literature, history, and the American West. He is currently completing a collection of short stories, translating an Italian work into English, and working on future Hemingway scholarship. He has also recorded and released five albums of original music.
