Free event! Tuesday, December 9th from 7pm-9pm at the Ken Kunkel Community Center in Goldstream.Join The Lead Dog Project for our next installment of the Learning Series: Mushing in Denali with the Alaskan Freighting Dog. We are excited to welcome the Denali National Park & Preserve Kennels Manager David Tomeo and Intern Ranger Kaelle Daugherty to speak with us!
The National Park Service operates a historic sled dog kennel in Denali, where teams are used for winter patrols and essential park operations.
The wilderness trails established by the Parkβs sled dog teams are also open to visiting mushers who want to experience the beauty of Denali in winter.
Each summer, up to 80,000 visitors come to the kennel to learn about this unique and enduring tradition. In winter, the dogs haul freight and support scientific research and maintenance efforts throughout the park. These larger, freight-style dogs are vital for navigating Denaliβs rugged terrain, and the NPS Kennel actively seeks partnerships with other kennels that work with similar dogs.
