Alaska Plant Teachings with Naomi MichalsenJoin us for an inspiring Museum Midday with Kaasei, Naomi Michalsen (Tlingit) as she shares Alaska Plant Teachings: A Tool For Connecting with Alaskan Plants, Cultural Traditions and Community.
Naomi’s work centers on strengthening wellbeing and cultural resilience through Indigenous foods, plant knowledge, and traditional practices. She is the founder of Kaasei Indigenous Foodways, offering workshops, retreats, trainings, and community-based resources across the state. Her leadership includes co-creating the widely used “Respectful Harvesting Guidelines” and guiding the development of the Alaska edition of the Plant Teachings for Growing Social-Emotional Skills Toolkit, a set of resources now used in classrooms and communities statewide.
With over three decades of experience in wellness work, domestic violence and substance abuse prevention, education, and cultural teaching, Naomi brings deep knowledge and a grounded, community-centered approach. Her plant cards, activities, and teaching tools are used across Alaska to support cultural learning, food sovereignty, and social-emotional wellbeing.
Come learn, reflect, and connect as Naomi shares the teachings of Alaska’s plants and the cultural wisdom they carry.
