Touring Comedian Max Wilton was riding high: appearances on Live at the Apollo, Eight out of Ten Cats and, before it was scrapped, Mock the Week had ensured that his tours sold out. However, as the first night in Exeter is about to start, a stagehand doing the 15-minute call to the stage finds Max dead in his dressing room.The emergency services are called, and it soon becomes clear that his death has not been a natural one. Police, in the form of Detective Chief Inspector Charles Appleby, arrive and begin an investigation. He calls on those present at the theatre to help him with his enquiries.
