Set 100 years apart but joined by the glamour of the Gilded Age (and a more than little gore), Five Found Dead and The Empress Murders twist the conventions of classic murder mysteries. Class, empire, privilege and inherited wealth are all sliced and diced, as the bodies pile up. With witty rapid-fire dialogue, Toby Schmitz and Sulari Gentill take us on a wild (Atlantic cruise and Orien Express) ride; characters racing against time to find the murderer and save themselves. Will you catch the killer before the detectives do?
Moderated by Canberra author of The Deed, Susannah Begbie.
Sulari Gentill is the author of The Hero Trilogy and the multi-award-winning Rowland Sinclair Mysteries, ten historical crime novels (thus far) chronicling the life and adventures of her 1930s Australian gentleman artist. The first book in this series was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and the second won the Davitt Award. The remaining books have been variously shortlisted for the Davitt Award, the Ned Kelly Award, and the Australian Book Industry Association Awards. In 2018, Gentill’s After She Wrote Him won the Ned Kelly Award and was shortlisted for the Davitt Award, The Woman in the Library, published in 2022, was a USA Today Bestseller, nominated for an Edgar Award (US), an Amazon Editor’s Pick, a Goodreads Most Anticipated Read and won the CrimeFictionLover Award (UK).
Toby Schmitz is a writer, director and actor. He was most recently seen on television in Boy Swallows Universe and on stage in Gaslight. He has received nominations for his performances in The Seagull, Thyestes, Much Ado About Nothing, Measure for Measure, Ruben Guthrie and The Great. His television credits include The Twelve and Black Sails. He is also a celebrated playwright. His plays include Degenerate Art, I Want to Sleep With Tom Stoppard and Capture the Flag. He was awarded the Patrick White Award for his play Lucky.
