In collaboration with Cine Latino, we invite you to the screening of "Mundurukuyü – The Forest of the Fish Women" (2025), and a conversation about the film.MUNDURUKUYÜ is a beautiful documentary about the mythology and ways of life of the Munduruku people of Brazil.
Three women from the film collective Daje Kapap Eypi come together to discuss what they would include in a documentary about their people, if they were to make it themselves. They are familiar with the portrayals that have been made by outside filmmakers about Brazil and the rest of the Americas, and the three reflected documentarians decide to do it their own way. The result is a film about traditions, origin stories, and the problems their people encounter in the face of the majority society historically and to this day.
MUNDURUKUYÜ is at the same time a visually beautiful and a socially engaged documentary. The filmmakers let the elders share the stories that their society is built upon, illustrated with beautiful animations that show a thoughtful relationship between people, animals, rivers, and plants. This holistic worldview is reflected in a film that is both charming and thought-provoking while at the same time being clear in its message.
After the screening, we will have a conversation about the film together with:
- Ana Carolina Alfinito Vieira (Amazon Watch / Federal University of Pará in Brazil) and
- Ana Braconnier (Universidad Rafael Landívar in Guatemala / LawTransform)
They will join us digitally, and Lara Côrtes (Coordinator for LawTransform) will moderate the conversation.
This event is sponsored by the CMI-LawTransform PluriLand project: https://www.cmi.no/projects/2484-pluriland-theorizing-conflict-and-contestation-in-plural-land-rights-regimes
The screening and seminar will take place at the Faculty of Law, UiB, in the auditorium located on the ground floor of the JUS-II building, room no. 145. The address is Jekteviksbakken 31, but the entrance is from Nøstegaten.
