All educators are welcome but this event is especially focused on grades K-8.
Meet our special guest children's literature creators:
SHAWN HARRIS is an award-winning creator of books for kids. He received a Caldecott Honor for his debut authored book Have You Ever Seen a Flower?, which the New York Times called a “stunning tour de force.” He is also the creator of the picture books The Teeny-Weeny Unicorn, Doing Business, and Let’s Be Bees. His work as an illustrator includes What Can a Citizen Do?, Her Right Foot, and the Newbery Medal-winning bestseller The Eyes and the Impossible, all written by Dave Eggers; A Polar Bear in the Snow by Mac Barnett; and Everyone’s Awake by Colin Meloy, among others. He lives in Northern California, where he also writes songs, surfs, and plays racquetball.
ROSANNE PARRY is the author of the bestselling novels A Wolf Called Wander, A Whale of the Wild, A Horse Named Sky, and A Wolf Called Fire, as well as The Wolf Effect, a picture book illustrated by Jennifer Thermes. These “Voice of the Wilderness” stories center the voices of wild animals and focus on their struggle to survive in a dangerous and changing world. Based on rigorous research and inspired by the real animals of the western United States, Rosanne’s books are treasured by teachers and librarians and adored by animal-loving readers of all ages. The author lives with her family in Portland, Oregon, and writes in a treehouse in her backyard.
THIEN PHAM is a graphic novelist and educator based in Oakland, CA. He is the author and illustrator of the graphic novel Sumo and the illustrator for the middle-grade graphic novel Level Up, written by Gene Luen Yang. His graphic novel, Family Style, a memoir about his family's immigration to America told through the lens of food, has been on numerous best-of lists including the Washington Post’s “Top Ten Graphic Novels of 2023” and Publishers Weekly's “20 Books We Love.” Family Style was a finalist for the ALA YALSA Excellence in Non-Fiction and won an Eisner award for Best Memoir Graphic Novel. Currently, Pham is working on his next graphic novel, teaching, and eating. A lot.
DASHKA SLATER is the New York Times bestselling author of numerous books for children, teenagers, and adults, including the award-winning nonfiction titles Accountable and The 57 Bus as well as the beloved Escargot picture book series. A Pushcart Prize nominee and the recipient of a Creative Writing Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, Dashka is a frequent speaker at schools, conferences, colleges, and universities. Her forthcoming nonfiction narrative, The Wild Season, has already received two starred reviews. She lives in Oakland, California and teaches at the University of San Francisco’s MFA Program in Writing for Young Readers.
MAGGIE TOKUDA-HALL has an MFA in creative writing from USF, and BA in art from Scripps College. She’s the author of numerous award winning, best-selling children’s and young adult books including Love in the Library, The Mermaid the Witch and The Sea duology, Squad, and The Worst Ronin. She has been called “… one of the most unflinching voices in contemporary genre literature.” Maggie is a founding member and national leader of Authors Against Book Bans. She lives in Oakland, California with her husband, children, and objectively perfect dog.
