The Midwest Classic Movies Series takes movies from the 1910's to the 1960's and, on the 3rd Saturday of the month, puts them where they belong - back on the big screen!Acclaimed filmmaker Frank Capra (who directed January's M.C.M. - It Happened One Night) turns his masterful story telling towards Washington D.C. with 1939's Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, starring James Stewart, Jean Arthur, Claude Rains, Thomas Mitchell, and Harry Carry.
Mr. Smith (Stewart) is a naive youth leader who is appointed to fill a vacancy in the U.S. Senate. He thinks it's a dream come true working with the state's senior senator--presidential hopeful and childhood hero, Senator Joseph Paine (Rains). In Washington, however, Smith discovers many of the shortcomings of the political process with the help of his cynical secretary, Saunders (Arthur). His idealistic plans promptly collide with corruption at home and subterfuge from his hero in Washington, but he tries to forge ahead despite attacks on his character. Standing up for what is right in the face of a political machine that cares more about money than its constitutes. Mr. Smith Goes to Washington is as relevant today as it was 85 years ago.
