MPavilion 10 — The Art of Wagashi

Come learn more about wagashi, intricate Japanese sweets made from ingredients like adzuki beans and yuzu. Traditionally served with green tea, wagashi designs often reflect the seasons, landscapes and moods.

Attendees will be able to enjoy the balance of wagashi and tea as they pause and reflect on Ando-san’s architecture and the way light and water highlight the landscape of the gardens. See and experience different types of wagashi and learn more about this part of Japanese cuisine.

MStudio invites you to experience the outcomes of MPavilion 10’s commissioning program, created in response to Tadao Ando’s design.

Each session includes an introduction from Minako Asai and a serving of Wagashi with a tea pairing.

While the event is free, it is essential to book a ticket in advance through Eventbrite to secure your spot.

Please arrive at MPavilion ahead of time, as late arrivals may result in the reassignment of tickets to other visitors.

Minako Asai is the owner and creator of MinnieSweets, creating delicious, authentic and seasonal Japanese confectionery (known as “wagashi”) by hand. After a career working in the incredible food hall of one of Japan’s largest department stores, Minako is on a mission to make Melbourne known for wagashi, and runs workshops, demonstrations and events to further educate and promote this overlooked part of Japanese cuisine.

The Art of Wagashi was commissioned by MPavilion as part of MStudio.

Auslan Interpreter

Need an Auslan interpreter? We can book one for you for individual events. If you would like to attend an event and require an Auslan interpreter, or another form of audio accessibility, email us at [email protected], please note we require a minimum of one week’s notice in advance. There are very few qualified Auslan interpreters in the industry, so we cannot guarantee their availability.

Headphones, tablets and other devices used to assist with communication are welcome.

Wheelchair access

There is wheelchair access from the paved paths in the park to MPavilion 2023, with a short distance on the grass to reach the structure.

From the nearest parking/taxi drop-off point on St Kilda Road, it is approximately 60 steps to reach the MPavilion.

Accessible toilet

Accessible bathrooms are located in the Queen Victoria Gardens on Linlithgow Avenue.

Seating

Limited seating is available inside MPavilion, with extra seating added for scheduled events. Please inform onsite staff if you have essential seating requirements. Assistance animals

Assistance animals are always welcome to accompany owners to events at MPavilion.
