Mozart disguised his authorship of the Duo for Violin and Viola, K. 423 to help his ill friend, composer Michael Haydn, meet a deadline. The three‑movement work reflects Mozart’s mature chamber style and showcases unusually equal interplay between the two instruments. / Zemlinsky sets a subdued atmosphere in the opening of his Trio for Clarinet, Cello and Piano, a work widely thought to be modeled after Brahms’s trio for the same instruments. Zemlinsky blends the deep sonorities of cello and clarinet to great lyrical effect throughout this three-movement work, while placing the greatest technical demands on the pianist. / Dvořák composed his Piano Quartet in E-flat major in a mere nine days at his summer home in Vysoká, Bohemia. “The melodies just surged upon me,” he wrote to a friend. A rhapsodic spirit animates the work, from its robust texture and melodic inventiveness to its diversity of musical characters.
