About this Event
"A BINDING TRUTH" transcends the boundaries of time to explore the deep connection between two former high school classmates. The film highlights how a shared last name masks a deeper, shared history rooted in slavery and its lasting impact on their lives. See this award winning documentary before it is shown widely on PBS and learn more about our shared history. Discuss your thoughts about the movie with your local community.
We have the honor of premiering this 90-minute film to the public before a shorter version is hosted by North Carolina PBS on October 1. Please check local listings.
In 1965, Jimmie became the first Black football star at an affluent Charlotte high school, thrust into one of North Carolina’s most volatile civil rights cases. De witnessed the events and wrote about them in a college essay. Decades later, a discovery in church records uncovers buried secrets, linking their lives to America’s broader story of slavery’s legacy, racial division, and the search for healing—their shared “binding truth.”
Benedictine University has generously offered their location for this screening which is co-sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Downers Grove, Woodridge and Lisle and CA2BC of the Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church.
