About this Event
The Tagore Centre, Embassy of India, Berlin is delighted to host book launch of "Move Through Math" by Dr. Janani Suresh Ram.
Move Through Math is a handbook for parents, facilitators, and educators working with children aged 5–10 years, exploring how abstract mathematical concepts can be made tangible through movement, sound, rhythm, and spatial awareness. Rooted in the principles of embodied education, the book draws from movements adapted from Bharatanatyam to offer a culturally grounded and multisensory approach to early mathematics learning, one that engages the whole child, not just the mind.
Author Janani Suresh Ram brings together her background in education and movement to present a framework that challenges conventional approaches to teaching mathematics. By integrating body-based learning with classical Indian movement traditions, Move Through Math opens a conversation about how children learn, how culture informs pedagogy, and how art and education can meaningfully intersect.
The event will include:
- An author presentation on the philosophy and framework behind the book
- A live demonstration of mathematical concepts expressed through Bharatanatyam-inspired movement
- A guided participation segment with accessible movement explorations for all attendees
- An open discussion on interdisciplinary and intercultural approaches to education
- Book signing and informal networking
This event is particularly relevant for teachers, parents, movement educators, and anyone interested in innovative and holistic approaches to child development and learning.
About the Author
Dr. Janani Suresh Ram is a dancer, choreographer, researcher, and educator with over 30 years of practice in Bharatanatyam. She began her training at the age of five under Kalaimamani K.J. Sarasa and Kalaimamani Lavanya Sankar, and has performed across India and Germany. She holds a Master's degree in Bharatanatyam from Sastra University, India (2015), and a doctorate in Performance Studies from the University of Tübingen, Germany (2020), following four years of research.
Her academic work sits at the intersection of classical Indian dance, mathematics, and embodied learning. Her published paper Representing Infinity through Bharatanatyam explores how abstract mathematical concepts including infinity, the Fibonacci sequence, and fractals can be expressed through gesture, repetition, symmetry, and spatial movement. Her current research continues this inquiry, examining how the mathematical patterns found in nature can be made visible and felt through dance.
As a choreographer, her latest production Blend brings together Bharatanatyam and Western classical violin and cello in an intercontinental dialogue of art forms. She is also the founder of Dance Parlour, a platform where choreographic research, interpretations, and reflections are regularly published. Move Through Math is a natural extension of this body of work bringing her research out of the academy and into the hands of educators and parents.
The Tagore Centre, Embassy of India, Berlin, is pleased to host this launch as part of its ongoing commitment to fostering dialogue between art, education, and cultural heritage.
Join us for an evening that reimagines what a classroom can look like and what it means for a child to truly understand mathematics.
