The newest independent, DIY news and culture website in St. Louis is celebrating its launch with a night of film, music, and poetry. Join us at the Whiskey Ring in the Cherokee arts and dining district from 7pm-10pm. We'll also be discussing the state of local news media and the need for non-commercial outlets to fill the void left by an ever-shrinking number of journalists at an also-shrinking number of commercial outlets. A full entertainment listing will be added as details are confirmed.
Film Screening
Chan Maurice Evans - They Called Me A Sellout
This documentary series began as an autobiographical venture into my life growing up in a medium-sized, suburban Illinois town, as, sort of, an outcast. I am a Black American that happened to prefer the sounds of Rock, Pop and Alternative music, and that enthusiasm put me at odds with my family and Black friends. I was called a “sellout,” and I was bullied and given rude nicknames, and they would ask, in jest, “Why do you listen to that white-boy music?” What I didn’t know was, Rock & Roll was borne of The Blues, Negro spirituals, African rhythms and musical scales that came directly from the bowels of slave ships, cotton fields, and Black American ancestry. What I did not see coming, in my research and development of these stories, was a whole lot bigger than just me. This is American music history.
