The Salisbury Symphony celebrates the soul of American music: a concert that bridges classical artistry and the irresistible grooves of Motown and soul.
At the center of the evening, Dr. Anthony Davis, President of Livingstone College, narrates Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" over George Walker's aching Lyric for Strings — one voice, one string orchestra, and a few minutes that reframe everything around them.
Joined by vocalists Ciara Harper and Noel Walton and the Jubilee Chorus (Kay Norman, director), the orchestra takes on Ain't No Mountain High Enough, Superstition, I Want You Back, Respect, September, Stop! In the Name of Love, The Tears of a Clown, and a Stevie Wonder medley.
Also on the program: Coleridge-Taylor's Un sonnet d'amour, read alongside Maya Angelou's "Caged Bird."
