Course Overview:

This course offers a comprehensive exploration of the motivational Interviewing technique used in clinical social work to help clients find the motivation to change their behaviors.

Participants will delve into the foundational process of motivational Interviewing (MI), emphasizing the tenants of the MI process (engaging, foucsing, evoking, and planning)and the OARS communication skills. Through interactive discussions and reflective exercises, participants will emerge equipped with a deeper understanding of how to effectively apply motivational Interviewing as a intervention in ways that honor and uplift Black and African American communities.

This course is ideal for social workers, counselors, healthcare professionals, community organizers, and anyone involved in supporting individuals and communities impacted mental health diagnoses.

Objectives:

• Define and understand the components of Motivational Interviewing (MI)
• Develop an awareness of the importance and evidence for the use of MI
• Gain knowledge of the Transtheoretical Model stages of change
• Apply MI skills and techniques in practice
