Course Overview:
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based, patient-centered counseling method focused on goal-oriented change. Designed to empower clients through self-motivation, MI is particularly useful in addressing ambivalence toward behavioral change, making it highly effective for mental health, substance use, and chronic health conditions. This one-day interactive training provides participants with practical tools to facilitate client-driven change and techniques for addressing resistance constructively. Through role-playing, group activities, and reflection, participants will leave equipped to implement MI in their practice settings.
Learning Objectives:
- By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
- Understand client behavior and motivation for change.
- Apply MI as an alternative to persuasion, focusing on client-driven solutions.
- Use effective communication skills to encourage conversation and support change.
- Assess client readiness to change using the Transtheoretical Model of Behavior Change.
- Elicit and strengthen clients' intrinsic motivation by exploring and resolving ambivalence.
- Respond constructively to resistance in client sessions.
- Put MI techniques into practice, with a focus on reflective listening, effective questioning, and summarizing.
- Integrate the person-centered spirit of MI to foster client autonomy and self-efficacy.
- Manage neutrality effectively when clients make challenging decisions.
- Address common frustrations and improve clinical confidence in guiding change.
Course Goals:
- Alternative to Persuasion: Learn MI as a collaborative approach for behavior change.
- Client Motivation: Help clients uncover and act on their motivations for positive change.
- Progressive Skills: Enhance awareness of session dynamics and adjust as needed.
- Patient-Centered Approach: Infuse MI’s principles into everyday client interactions.
- Constructive Responses: Use MI techniques effectively when facing client resistance or ambivalence.
This one-day course emphasizes practical experience, with non-threatening group activities, skill-building exercises, and reflection opportunities to foster confidence in using MI skills.
