Heading EAST from the Americana
1. Dog Haus 1302 E Route 66 Flagstaff, AZ 86001-Most people think the Eagles hit “Take it Easy” was inspired by songwriter Jackson Brown’s experience on a corner in Winslow, Arizona, Well, here’ s the skinny: according to an interview with local entertainment producer Matthew Ziegler, “The image of that girl driving a truck was an image that came from east Flag(staff). … It wasn’t really a flatbed Ford. It was a Toyota truck, and it was pulling out of Weinerschnitzel.” The drive-thru has since changed its name to Dog Haus, and is well-known for the dogs and breakfast burritos.
2. Miz Zip’s 2924 E Rt 66 Flagstaff, AZ 86004 Miz Zip's is a Flagstaff landmark that has withstood more than 50 years of change. Joe and Lila Lockhard, with her sons, Howard, Bob Leonard, and Bob's wife, Norma, purchased a motel, service station and Trixie's Diner in 1942. They wanted a name with more zip for the café and settled on the name Miz Zip's.
A beloved local diner, the pies are as great as ever.
3.Museum Club 3404 E Rt 66, Flagstaff, AZ 86004 Known locally as “The Zoo”. It began as a taxidermy museum/shop in 1931 when taxidermist Dean Eldredge constructed what he believed was “the largest log cabin in the nation.”. The building is designated as a Historic Landmark. It became a night club/bar in the 1930s and continues to be a popular country music honky-tonk. The neon guitar sign at the side of the road has become an icon of Route 66.
4. Right next door is Starlite Lanes, 3406 E Rt 66, Flagstaff, AZ 86004. In operation since 1957, and the oldest operating bowling alley on Rt. 66 in Arizona. They are also renowned locally for great food. Some would say their food will bowl you over.
5. Route 66 Monument Signs – East Route 66. Continue north to the turn off on E. Rt. 66 and continue along an original piece of the Mother Road to find two large stone Rt. 66 monuments. One is behind the Flagstaff mall, while the other is further along the road. Great photo opportunity.
Heading WEST from the Americana
6. Galaxy Café 931 W. Rt 66 Flagstaff, AZ 86001
As classic a Mother Road diner as can be found, the Galaxy brings back the 50’s in decor and cuisine. Boasting 100 flavors of milkshakes, classic burgers and baskets, juke boxes, and bobby sox.
7. Mother Road Brewing Co. 7 S Mikes Pike, Flagstaff, AZ 86001 This locally owned craft brewery is on the original alignment of Rt. 66 that followed the railroad spur (Mikes Pike) that serviced Flagstaff’s Riordan Lumber Mill. The family-friendly taproom, located in the 1920s Milum Building, serves beer with Route 66 inspired names such as the Daily Driver and the Turbo Tower Station.
8. Flagstaff Visitors Center. 1 E Rt 66 Ste 1, Flagstaff, AZ 86001 Located on Route 66 in the historic downtown train station, the Flagstaff Visitor Center is your resource for personalized travel information, free guides, maps and brochures. The gift shop features a wide selection of Flagstaff and train-themed souvenirs. The mural painted in the parking lot is must-see.
9. Americana Motor Hotel 650 E Rt 66, Flagstaff, AZ 86004 The launching place for great Route 66 adventures. Registration Packet pick up will be available from Noon to 3:00 pm The Cruise/Rally is from Noon – 3:00 pm and the Poolside Party is from 3:00 pm to 6:00pm.
