With Dean Mermell, Eric Garland, Joe Kyle, Kymry Esainko, and Tom Griesser
“With so much swing and a bit of snark, Mose always knew just the right way to deliver his wise blues." Flower Piano co-creator Dean Mermell originally hoped for someone to perform a Mose Allison tribute at the popular SF event, but soon realized he just wanted to sing those tunes himself. Featuring a powerful quartet of well known amazing local players, Mose Def celebrates the legacy of a brilliant American songsmith.
Mose Allison’s lyrical and musical output is unequaled. He may be the greatest unsung hero of jazz-blues music. His smooth, ironic delivery and cynical optimism is matched only by his jaw dropping musical inventions, solos, and voicings. Songs like Your Mind is on Vacation (but your Mouth is Working Overtime), Everybody’s Cryin' Mercy, and I Don’t Worry ‘Bout a Thing (‘Cause I know Nothin’s gonna be Alright) seem to prove that Mose was the Randy Newman of jazz. Mose Def channels the man’s uncompromising wit and musical excellence to keep the flame alive.
This show will feature Joe Kyle Jr. standing in on the big bass for Daniel Fabricant, Kymry Esainko on piano, Eric Garland on drums, tenor sax workingman Tom Griesser sharing the solo duties, and Dean Mermell on the mic.
