NC Raga Revival is a monthly concert series showcasing the music and dance of the South Asian diaspora and collaborations with other world music artists
We are excited to offer a triple feature in the following order.

Artist Bios
Gargi Dixit is a Hindustani classical vocal music student. She has been learning vocal music for the past 11 years from Mrs. Vaijayanti Gholap in Pune, India, who is the disciple of Khansaheb Gulam Khwaja. She is a recent graduate of UNC Chapel Hill where she studied biostatistics.
Dr. Ajay Dholakia is a long-time Triangle resident. He comes from a family of Indian Hindustani Classical musicians and has been playing and teaching Tabla in the area for many years. He started learning tabla during his highschool days in Indore, India. He has played percussion and tabla with different rock, fusion and folk music bands. and has accompanied many visiting classical vocalists and instrumentalists. He continues his tabla journey at the Anindo Chatterjee School of Tabla.
Ramya Bhat is a native of Kumta Taluk in Uttara Kannada District, Karnataka. She is a disciple of Dr. Ashok Huggannavar, a renowned Hindustani vocalist from Dharwad. She was a scholar at the ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata, under the guidance of Vidushi Shubhra Guha in 2012-2013.
She was a Senior Consultant with Deloitte before moving to the US earlier this year.
Along with her sister Reshma Bhat as one half of the ‘Bhat Sisters’ duo, Ramya has performed across India, including Aarohi by Pancham Nishad (Mumbai), Dharwad, Kundgol Vade, Pt. Jaytheertha Mevundi’s ‘Swaratheertha’ concert, Pt. Bhimsen Joshi’s Birth Centenary series and the Uttar-Dakshin series in Bangalore. In 2015, she was selected to represent Indian music at Ethnos Sweden. Now a resident of Morrisville, she is continuing her musical journey in the US.
Deepak Kulkarni comes from the cradle of Hindustani classical music - Dharwad in Karnataka and developed a deep interest in music at a very young age. He is trained in both Harmonium and Tabla instruments. Deepak has received training in the Lucknow Gharana style from Shri Debasish Choudhuri. He is receiving advanced training in Harmonium from Pt Vyasmurti Katti. He has performed solo and has accompanied artists in the US as well as several visiting artists from India. As a promoter of classical music, he is actively involved in organizing concerts for the younger generation in his hometown of Dharwad. He also provides training for young artists interested in learning the nuances of Indian classical music.
John Stephens is a sarode, surbahar and sitar player based in Durham, North Carolina. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Jazz Composition at Berklee College of Music (2006) and his MFA in North Indian music at CalArts (2011). John is a performing musician, recording artist, music educator and student of sarode maestro Ustad Aashish Khan, eldest son of Ustad Ali Akbar. John is the author of “The Microtones of Bharata’s Natyashastra,” Volume 6 of Analytical Approaches to World Music(aawmjournal.com). He also wrote the introduction and transcribed Aashish Khan’s music in Sangeet: Legacy of the Maihar Gharana.
VW Chitnis began learning Sitar at the age of 15. He received his training at the Ali Akbar College of Music under the guidance of Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. He is the founder of North Carolina Raga Revival as well as School of Rag Indian Music Academy located in Raleigh NC and Brooklyn NY.
He has received training on the Indian violin instruments, dilruba and esraj by the late Sarangi Maestro Pt Ramesh Misra. He lives in Raleigh NC with his wife Jill Taylor and daughter Nikhila Chitnis.
