Title: Taking Risks for No Good Reason
Details: Why do some people who want to hike the 2,000-mile Appalachian Trail finish it but others quit? And, if they’re doing it for fun, for stress release, for recreation, for fitness, or for physical or mental health, why do these hikers end up being unhealthy in the process? In this presentation, I’ll discuss my line of research with over 1,000 Appalachian Trail hikers that helps us understand the psychological factors underlying these behaviors. But this isn’t just about hiking. This is about a human tendency to engage in unhealthy behaviors and risk getting injured in order to achieve goals. Strangely, we'll see humans taking incredible risks for goals that don't even matter in the big scheme of things. They're not taking the risks so they can feed their families or get a promotion or anything vital to life. So...why are they taking these risks?

Title: Aging Well in a World Focused on Youth
Details: Most people believe things about the aging process that are simply not true. Unfortunately, the negative stereotypes about aging can be internalized and negatively affect our aging process. The good news is that research shows us not only can we shift our expectations by learning the truth about aging, this can shift our experiences in our own aging process. In this talk, myths about aging will be busted with real research on how we age biologically, emotionally, cognitively, and socially. Recommendations for aging well overall will be made.
