About this Event
In partnership with the On the Canals program, the Village of Brockport will again be offering snow adventures. These guided treks will take place along the Erie Canal as we enjoy the beauty of winter and the peacefulness along the canal under the full moon. It is suitable for any age and fitness level. If we don’t have snow, we will go anyway but without the equipment.
Equipment Available:
We will have snowshoes and trekking poles available for reservation or you can bring your own. Reserve your equipment by picking the appropriate weight ticket. This will ensure that your snowshoes are working and will be easy to manage. There is some leeway but if you use snowshoes rated at a lower weight, you will sink more in the snow and therefore expend more energy. At a higher weight, they will feel heavier and be harder to handle. If you have your own equipment, sign up for that ticket and join us.
NEW: We will have two Kettler Snow Sleds available for each excursion! These sleds provide a supportive seat back and tubular side railing, and three adjustable belts in the foot, waist, and upper torso areas. Weight limit 220 pounds. It comes with a push handle system and pull rope so the rider can be assisted. Please bring a companion (or two) to assist you and have them get a ticket so that they have snowshoes to use. Staff are also able to assist.
An ASL Interpreter can be requested with four (4) days' notice by emailing us at [email protected].
We will meet at the Welcome Center, 11 Water Street, Brockport, where there is municipal parking and accessible bathrooms. We will hand out equipment, make adjustments, and then travel (cross Park Avenue Lift Bridge and head west across paved walkway and around the paved detour) to the canal path at the Main Street Lift Bridge to begin our journey. We will finish at the Welcome Center to warm up with hot chocolate and make s’mores. The excursion will start at 6:00 pm. We will go about a mile and a half to two miles west on the canal towpath (stone cinders) and should return in one and a half to two hours. Please don't bring any of your four-legged friends so that we don't get tangled up as we go.
Wearing the right clothing; layers that are warm, easy to adjust, vent easily, and are durable are best. If the layers are lightweight, this makes things even more comfortable. The best shoes to wear are winter boots or hiking boots.
If you are able to carry a small pack, you should bring an extra layer of warm clothing, hat, gloves, and a water bottle. Your phone should be kept in an inner pocket close to your body so that the cold doesn't drain the battery.
Look for our other dates in January and February and events, including bird watching.
In case of severe weather, please check back here for event status.
