About this Event
This month, we will discuss Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate.
Lisa Wingate, the author, grew up in Dallas, Texas and now lives in the Texas Hill Country. She is a bestselling author known for historical and contemporary fiction, including Before We Were Yours. The novel was inspired by research into the Tennessee Children's Home Society adoption scandal, which involved children taken from poor families and illegally placed with adoptive families in the early–mid 20th century.
The Fiction Story: In 1939 Memphis, twelve-year-old Rill Foss and her four younger siblings are taken from their family’s Mississippi River shantyboat and placed in an orphanage where children are abused, renamed, and secretly adopted out, forcing Rill to fight to protect her siblings and hold onto their identity.
Decades later, successful lawyer Avery Stafford begins investigating a mysterious encounter that leads her to uncover hidden family connections and a painful history tied to the same orphanage. As the two stories gradually intersect, the novel explores how long-buried secrets, resilience, and the search for belonging shape generations of one famil
