About this Event

"Mongolia: The Story of Democratic Oasis" is a cultural and historical exhibition commemorating Mongolia's peaceful democratic revolution of 1989 to 1990, one of the rare nonviolent democratic movements in modern history to transform an authoritarian state without bloodshed.

Presented through documentary photography and political satire, the exhibition honors the ordinary Mongolians whose courage, unity, and civic action changed the course of their nation's history. At a time when democratic values face growing challenges worldwide, it serves as both a remembrance and a reflection on the enduring importance of democracy, civic participation, and peaceful political transition.

Beginning with the first public demonstrations in December 1989, Mongolians from all walks of life (students, workers, teachers, artists, families, elders, and children) joined a nationwide movement that led to democratic reforms and the establishment of Mongolia's multi-party system. Thirty-five years later, those historic moments risk fading from public memory. This exhibition seeks to preserve that legacy while introducing U.S. audiences and policymakers to Mongolia's democratic journey and its significance as a democratic oasis in Central Asia.

FEATURED ARTISTS

Tsatsralt Sereeter

An honored Mongolian photographer and firsthand witness to the democratic revolution, Tsatsralt Sereeter documented the protests, rallies, hunger strikes, and civic mobilization that shaped Mongolia's democratic transition. His photographs capture both the historical weight and the human spirit of the movement.

Tsogtbayar Samandar

A celebrated Mongolian political satirist and cartoonist, Tsogtbayar Samandar uses humor, symbolism, and reflection to explore democracy, freedom, civic responsibility, and social transformation. His political cartoons offer an artistic and philosophical dialogue alongside the historical photographs.

For the first time, the works of these two distinguished artists are presented together in a unified exhibition.
