Március 23-án ismét egy különleges vetítéssel készülünk, ezúttal a rendhagyó animációs filmek világába kalauzoljuk el a nézőket. Christiane Cegavske amerikai képzőművész és animációs alkotó Vértea és a vörös madzag (Blood Tea and Red String) című munkája a horror és a fantasy műfaját házasítja össze. Ez a 71 perces, 16 mm-es filmre forgatott, dialógus nélküli stop-motion tündérmese nem csupán egy unikális filmélmény, hanem egy radikálisan egyedi alkotói vállalkozásának eredménye is.
Cegavske 13 éven át készítette el alkotását: ő írta és rendezte a filmet, maga animálta a jeleneteket, valamint tervezte a bábokat, a díszleteket és a textúrákat is – minden egyes képkocka az ő keze munkáját viseli. Festészeti tanulmányai és installációs gyakorlata mélyen áthatja a látványvilágot, így a mű valóban „annyira szobrászati munka, mint amennyire mozi”, ahogyan a The New York Times találóan megfogalmazta.

A történet látszólag egy archaikus tündérmese szerkezetét követi. Arisztokratikus fehér egerek egy emberalakú babát rendelnek a különös, madárszerű lényektől, akik a tölgyfa alatt élnek. Amikor azonban az alkotók beleszeretnek saját teremtményükbe, és nem hajlandók átadni, az egerek az éj leple alatt ellopják. Az ezt követő keresés során a film egyre mélyebbre vezet egy szürreális, álomszerű univerzumba: hallucinogén gyümölcsökkel teli kert, húsevő növények, nőarcú pók vörös fonálból szőtt hálója, vérszínű tea és egy titokzatos tojásból kibomló lény képei váltják egymást. A mese fokozatosan válik allegóriává a teremtésről, a birtoklásról és a megszállottságról.
Cegavske képzőművészeti háttérből érkezett: festészeti tanulmányokat folytatott, majd a stop-motion animáció médiumában találta meg saját, mélyen szürrealista hangját. Munkásságában visszatérő motívum az antropomorfizmus – élettelen tárgyak, bábok és állati lények megelevenítése, amelyek egyszerre idézik a gyermeki képzelet világát és a tudattalan sötétebb rétegeit. A Vértea és a vörös madzag előtt több rövidfilmet (Blood and Sunflowers; 1992) készített, és dolgozott Asia Argento A szív csalfa vágyai (The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things) álomjelenetein is.

A Vértea és a vörös madzag az elmúlt években több mint harminc nemzetközi fesztiválon szerepelt, többek között a Boston Fantastic Film Festivalon, a Fantasia International Film Festivalon, az Austin Fantastic Festen, valamint a 2006-os Budapesti Titanic Filmfesztivál programjában is. Elnyerte a San Francisco-i Független Filmfesztivál Legjobb Animációs Filmnek járó díját, a Spudfest Legjobb Rendező elismerését, valamint a Fantasia Nemzetközi Filmfesztivál Ezüst Közönségdíját. Az évek során kultikus státuszba emelkedett, és rendszeresen szerepel minden idők legjobb stop-motion és szürrealista filmjeinek listáin.
A mostani vetítés ritka lehetőség arra, hogy ezt a kézzel épített, tapintható textúrákból és aprólékosan megformált miniatűr terekből álló világot vásznon tapasztaljuk meg. A vetítés után pedig egy kerekasztal beszélgetés során Papp Károly ,,Kása” bábanimátorral beszélgetünk a bábanimációról, a stop-motion filmkészítésről, valamint magukról a levetített filmek különlegességeiről.

On March 23, we are once again preparing a special screening - this time guiding audiences into the world of unconventional animated films. American visual artist and animator Christiane Cegavske’s work Blood Tea and Red String merges the genres of horror and fantasy. This 71-minute, dialogue-free stop-motion fairy tale, shot on 16mm film is not only a unique cinematic experience but also the result of a radically singular artistic undertaking.
Cegavske worked on the film for 13 years: she wrote and directed it, animated the scenes herself, and designed and crafted the puppets, sets, and textures - every single frame bears the mark of her hand. Her background in painting and installation art deeply permeates the film’s visual world, making it truly “as much sculpture as it is cinema,” as The New York Times aptly described it.

At first glance, the story follows the structure of an archaic fairy tale. Aristocratic white mice commission a humanoid doll from strange, bird-like creatures who live beneath an oak tree. When the creators fall in love with their own creation and refuse to hand it over, the mice steal it under the cover of night. The ensuing search leads ever deeper into a surreal, dreamlike universe: a garden filled with hallucinogenic fruit, carnivorous plants, a woman-faced spider weaving a web of red thread, blood-colored tea, and a mysterious being hatching from an egg unfold in succession. Gradually, the fairy tale transforms into an allegory of creation, possession, and obsession.
Cegavske comes from a fine arts background: she studied painting before finding her deeply surreal voice in the medium of stop-motion animation. A recurring motif in her work is anthropomorphism-the animation of inanimate objects, puppets, and animal beings that evoke both the realm of childhood imagination and the darker layers of the unconscious. Prior to Blood Tea and Red String, she directed several short films, including Blood and Sunflowers, and contributed to the dream sequences of The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things, directed by Asia Argento.

Over the years, Blood Tea and Red String has screened at more than thirty international festivals, including the Boston Fantastic Film Festival, the Fantasia International Film Festival, Fantastic Fest in Austin, and the 2006 Budapest Titanic Film Festival. It received the Best Animated Feature award at the San Francisco Independent Film Festival, Best Director at Spudfest, and the Silver Audience Award at the Fantasia International Film Festival.
Over time, it has achieved cult status and is regularly included on lists of the greatest stop-motion and surrealist films of all time.
This upcoming screening offers a rare opportunity to experience this handcrafted world of tangible textures and meticulously constructed miniature spaces on the big screen. After the screening, we will host a roundtable discussion with puppet animator Károly Papp “Kása” about puppet animation, stop-motion filmmaking, and the unique qualities of the films presented.
