About this Event

Stan Kessler doesn't just play trumpet. He is Kansas City jazz — a living bridge between the tradition and tomorrow, a musician's musician and a people's musician all at once. After 50 years as a trumpet and flugelhorn player, composer, and educator, Kessler has become the institutional memory and passionate advocate of the Kansas City jazz community, beloved not just for his virtuosity but for his humor, generosity, and refusal to play it safe.

His resume runs deep: collaborations with icons like Clark Terry and Paquito D'Rivera, 12 CDs, Musician of the Year honors, induction into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame in 2021, and the 2023 Duke Ellington Award for excellence in jazz education. He leads the beloved Sons of Brasil and keeps audiences guessing across jazz, R&B, funk, and Latin music. And after 25 years teaching jazz theory and improvisation, there may be no better jam host in Kansas City — this is a man who has spent his life pulling the best out of the musicians around him.

For Monday Night Jam, the Stan Kessler Quartet takes the featured set at 7 pm, then the stage opens up. Bring your instrument. Bring your ears. Expect warmth, playful antics, and an absolute commitment to making sure everyone in the room — on the bandstand or off — is having as much fun as Stan is.

Cover: $10 general public; free for AJM members, musicians, and students. The featured set starts at 7 pm; sign up at the door to sit in.
