Witnessing has multiple forms including being the witness, truly being witnessed, and the internal state associated with those acts of witnessing. It is notable that the verb of 'witnessing' can transform into the noun of becoming a 'witness'. What we truly see becomes who we are.
These works represent the different aspects of witnessing. The fumage works (done with smoke, charcoal, and acrylic) are about being the witness to what is occurring around us, the state that our country is in, the revelations that occur when we return to nature, and the act of truly seeing without barriers and filters. These works are intentionally subtle, using a great deal of greyscale in order to show how delicate that witnessing is and how it is a ephemeral and temporal state.
The 'Monkey in the Crown' series is about witnessing others with dignity and being witnessed for who we truly are. It also abut seeing the irony of the everyday and humility that dares to be glorified. Perhaps we are all crowned monkeys. The question is whether we are humble and noble or if we are posing as something we are not; fools in royal clothing.
The abstract works represent the internal state of witnessing and being witnessed. Some of these works were created when my mother-in-law was in her final days of life and there was an awareness of that transition. It was a place of vulnerability, struggle, and connection with the beyond. Overall, the abstract works use bold colors and are expressive as they voice the internal freedom we can have when we allow ourselves to truly witness without the default of intellectual processing.
