‘Modular Memory’ explores how archives – both tangible and intangible- shape our understanding of histories, places, and lived experiences. Archives exist not only as photographs, footage, and artefacts, but also through oral histories, myths, and stories. Beyond preserving knowledge, these fragments become ways of interpreting the world we inhabit from before until now. The modular aspect suggests the possibility of assembling and disassembling fragments, allowing multimodular archives to be reconnected and previously unheard narratives to emerge.
The films in this programme bring together colonial archives with personal memories, oral traditions, and undocumented experiences, creating new landscapes of memory through audiovisual practices. By suturing fragments of images, sounds, and stories, these works reveal the complex entanglements between colonial legacies and Southeast Asia’s ecological, social, economic, and political landscapes, tracing their ongoing aftermaths and afterlives.

This film programme is a collaboration between Alaya Ang and Anggraeni Widhiasih, as part of the exhibition on show in the Reid Gallery until 8th August.
Anggraeni Widhiasih is a researcher, artist, and curator from Indonesia. Her practice explores the intersections of memory, media, archives, and digital culture, focusing on how historical narratives are produced, contested, and circulated through film and social media. She was part of the curatorial team for ARKIPEL – Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival (2018–2025) and participated in the Film Criticism Writing Workshop at Salamindanaw Asian Film Festival in collaboration with the Yamagata Film Criticism Workshop (2016). She has worked with various art and film collectives in Indonesia, served as Editor-in-Chief of Visual Jalanan platform, worked as a socio-behavioural analyst in media consultation, and currently serves as a film programmer for NextScene Youth & Kids Film Festival 2026.
Alaya Ang is a Singapore-born artist and curator based in Glasgow. Through community-led and collective modes of working, Alaya’s practice engages with Southeast Asian histories and cosmologies to examine how migration, memory, and ancestral practices shape evolving understandings of home and belonging.
Access to the event is through the main entrance of the GSA Student Association, which has step-free access and double-width doors.
The Vic Bar is located on the ground floor.
