Model United Nations (Model UN) is an educational simulation in which students role-play as diplomats representing different countries at the United Nations. Participants research their assigned country’s policies, debate global issues, negotiate with other delegates, and work together to draft resolutions.
Through Model UN, students develop skills in public speaking, critical thinking, research, negotiation, and collaboration, while gaining a deeper understanding of international relations, global challenges, and diplomacy. The program encourages respectful dialogue, teamwork, and creative problem-solving as students seek peaceful solutions to real-world issues.
No previous experience is necessary. An online orientation will be held as well as chairpersons in each room who guide the participants.
Eligibility: Students in grades 4-8. Students must compete on their own; competing in pairs is not permitted. Students may compete independently of their school; homeschoolers are also welcome.
Format: In the morning, students will take part in a "Standard Committee" with traditional Model UN rules. In the afternoon, students will take part in a dynamic "Crisis Committee" where they'll need to debate and act on a hypothetical global crisis.
Age Divisions: To the best extent possible, we will separate students by grade. In particular, we anticipate at a minimum there being separate committee rooms at each conference for students in grades 7-8 and grades 4-6. Please note however that students in grades 4-5 will likely compete together at most or all conferences.
National Championships: The top 40% of students win awards and qualify for the inaugural Model UN National Championships in May in Orlando!
Cost: $95 per student. If a student takes part solely in the Standard Committee or the Crisis Committee, the cost is $75 per student.
