Mochitsuki

In collaboration with Japan-America Society of Dallas/Fort Worth, Dallas Japanese Association, and the Center for Asian Studies at the University of Texas at Dallas, you are invited to experience a beloved Japanese New Year tradition — pounding and sharing mochi to welcome health, happiness, and community in the year ahead.

Mochitsuki — the traditional ceremony of pounding rice into mochi — is one of Japan’s most iconic ways to welcome the New Year. The celebration symbolizes good health, longevity, and community unity. This annual event invites the Dallas-Fort Worth community to experience this tradition firsthand through demonstrations, tastings, and hands-on cultural activities and performances.

Event highlights include:

• Live Mochitsuki (mochi-pounding) demonstrations
• Freshly made mochi — soft, chewy, and delicious!
• Traditional Japanese New Year activities, including calligraphy, nengajo card-displays, kendama, koma, fukuwarai and more.
• Cultural performances by local artists (final lineup coming soon!)
• A special display of Nengajo (New Year’s greeting card) contest winners from JASDFW outreach schools
• Tour of Crow Museum of Asian Art
