About this Event
Roosevelt Road was once one of the most active nightlife corridors in the Chicago area, drawing entertainers, gamblers, and—at times—figures connected to organized crime. One notable location was the Armory Lounge, associated with Chicago Outfit boss Sam Giancana during the 1960s and located on the same site where Charlie’s restaurant stands today.
In this illustrated talk, cartoonist and true-crime researcher Bret Juliano explores the history of Chicago’s mob era and its connections to places like Forest Park and Roosevelt Road. Through historical research, rare stories, and examples from his comic series Dust Bunny Mafia and Based on a True Story, Juliano shows how real events from organized crime history can be documented and transformed into visual storytelling.
The presentation blends local history, true crime, and comics to uncover how the stories of Chicago’s underworld still echo through places we pass every day.
Bar available for purchase but k itchen will be closed. Ticket price includes a small bites box for each patron.
Bret Juliano will be available before and after the talk for book purchases.
