The 24th Annual MLK Day Observance will take place on Monday, January 20, 2025, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Columbia High School, 17 Parker Ave., Maplewood. This year’s theme, “Upholding Dr. King’s Legacy in Challenging Times,” emphasizes the need to reaffirm our commitment to racial equity and inclusion, particularly during a time when these values are facing significant challenges. The event will feature keynote speakers Dr. Saladin Ambar, senior scholar at Eagleton’s Center on the American Governor and political science professor at Rutgers, and Ibi Zoboi, New York Times bestselling author and editor of Black Enough: Stories of Being Young and Black in America.
The program will include interfaith readings, music, and dance, as well as a call to honor Dr. King’s vision of service and unity. A reception and Volunteer Fair will follow, offering opportunities to engage with community-building efforts.
The day will wrap up with the Luminary Lighting at Meadowland Park, following the events at the high school.
