About this Event
Commonly called Dr. King, Jr. Day or MLK Day, the third Monday of January is a federal holiday to honor his life and legacy as an activist during the Civil Rights Movement. MLK Day of Service serves as a call to action for communities to work together in creating a more equitable world for all.
“The greatest birthday gift my husband could receive is if people of all racial and ethnic backgrounds celebrated the holiday by performing individual acts of kindness through service to others.” - Coretta Scott King
Join National Park staff and partners on Saturday, January 17 from 9am to 12pm to help restore native vegetation in fire-impacted areas in Cheeseboro Canyon. Work with others to help plant hundreds of live plants grown from locally collected seed. Volunteers will also be able to join an interpretive walk led by staff explaining the significance of the area and work being done. No experience is needed and everyone is welcome.
All volunteers who work for the entire duration of the event will receive a free native plant!
Be prepared for the day:
Closed-toed shoes, sun protective layers, and a refillable water bottle are required at the event. Long pants, long sleeves, and a hat are strongly encouraged. We will supply tools, gloves, and training.
