This spring, a striking new art installation will transform the arrival court lawn of the California Center for the Arts, Escondido (CCAE). * (pronounced “Star”) is a 30-foot geometric sculpture, an awe-inspiring piece that blends mathematical precision with artistic vision. By day, the structure’s aluminum spikes and fabric sails interact with the shifting light, creating an elegant yet imposing presence. By night, 30 individually programmable LED floodlights illuminate the sails, transforming the sculpture into a glowing beacon visible from afar.
* is the latest work from Glass House Arts, an Escondido-based artist collective known for large-scale, immersive sculptures that invite curiosity and connection. Originally designed for Burning Man, this installation celebrates its roots by returning to the city where it was built—Escondido. The public will have the opportunity to engage with the work, not just as spectators, but as part of a growing community of makers and artists.
A Sculpture Built by the Community, for the Community
The story behind * is as compelling as the sculpture itself. More than 300 volunteers contributed to its creation, including local engineers, first-time fabricators, artists, and a quilting group from Escondido. Some of those involved had never made art before but found inspiration in the process, learning new skills—many even trying their hand at welding for the first time.
“The goal isn’t just to make art, but to make artists,” says Colin Jemmott, co-founder of Glass House Arts. “We want people to see a massive sculpture and say, ‘I helped build that,’ or even better, ‘I can make something like this too.’”
This installation is part of Escondido’s Arts, Culture & Creativity Month, highlighting the impact of public art on community engagement and local culture.
The presence of * in Escondido underscores the city’s commitment to fostering local artists and bridging the gap between traditional art institutions and grassroots creativity. This installation is a statement: large-scale, ambitious art isn’t just for museums or distant festivals—it’s for the people, built by the people, right here in Escondido.
