About this Event
Christmas - a time to wine, dine and be merry! And boy have we got a cracker of a wine tasting in store for you.
Whether you're dreaming of wines as white as snow or you're in the mood for a tipple redder than Rudolph's nose, this tasting is going to sleigh your taste buds like never before. Our WSET accredited wine elves will talk you through seven winter wine wonders that you'll be adding to your Christmas list.
What you'll be tasting:
Philippe Gonet Brut Reserve NV, Les Mesnil sur-Oger, Champagne, France
Gonet's Réserve Brut has revealed itself to be a wine of pleasure and sharing. The one-third of Chardonnay from Montgueux gives it excellent freshness. The voluptuous Pinot Noir and Meunier from the Vallée de la Marne harmoniously add the final touch. Pierre Gonet brings out the house’s fruitiest champagne to its best advantage.
VW 'Paradiesgarten' Erste Lage Riesling 2021, Pfalz, Germany
Grown under the somewhat suggestive eye of a statue of Eve, this Riesling is your gateway to Paradise. Single plot with oodles of flavours, 30% oak contact. Elegant, fresh and sexy. *Phew*. Was it good for you, too?
Domaine Michel Vattan 'Cuvee O-P' Sancerre Blanc 2023, Loire Valley, France
There’s Sancerre, and then there’s Sancerre that rallies you to do something grand and extravagant. 100% Sauvignon Blanc that rests on the fine lees for a couple of months to snatch some texture before it cracks in your mouth like a firework display of ripe peaches, lemon and sea pebbles. Who knew that 45-year-old vines and a bunch of geriatric rocks could produce this crunktastic white that ricochets rich fruit faster than your fired up neurons on caffeine?
Bartinney Chardonnay 2022, Stellenbosch, South Africa
Made on a mountain. These vines are but a wispy cloud away from heaven. The winged figure on the label represents elevage, this is a French term is used to describe a wine's progression from fermentation to bottling. Literally, it means to raise or elevate and to bring out the noble traits. That is exactly what Bartinney have done with this Chardonnay. This is elevated Chardonnay from elevated vineyards (400-550m above sea level).
Domaine Armelle & Rion Chorey-Les-Beaune, 2021, Burgundy, France
All hand-picked grapes are fermented in cement tanks before being aged in French oak barrels from 10 to 15 months. Such a scrumptious wine bursting at the seems with red fruits, we think this is one of the most food friendly Burgundy's around!
Podere Ruggeri Corsini Barolo DOCG 'Bussia' 2018, Piedmont, Italy
This one will inspire you to sell everything & buy a vineyard, just like Loredana and Nicola did. The fruit was handpicked, completely de-stemmed and lightly crushed. Oak maturation in a mix of new, 1 and 2 year old French Barrels and seasoned Slovenian casks for 30 months.
Cantina Ronca Ulderico Rosso 2018, Veneto, Italy
Amarone’s hipster brother. This cannot technically be called Amarone because it is made from rogue grapes and it lives on the wrong side of the tracks, but the Ulderico Rosso - made in an appassimento-style - is as good as any Amarone we’ve tried. With its minimalist bottle, its winemaking in conversion to organic and its thoroughly modern flavour, we wouldn’t be surprised if you peered through the glass and saw tattoos beneath.
