About this Event
Join a qualified City of London guide for a tour of the only remaining Victorian market in the City still trading on its original site, Smithfield Market. The tour takes 90 minutes.
We will wander the narrow alleyways surrounding the market and learn more about its history and hear stories of this fascinating area, including the story of the foundation of the 12C St Bartholomew the Great, of St Bart’s Hospital and of the use of ‘Smoothfield’ as an execution site.
Then we move inside the glorious iron-framed Horace Jones designed market building and wander through chatting to the stall holders as we go learning more about how the market functions. Rest assured you will have plenty of opportunity to buy, so come with a shopping bag, as there could well be some marvellous meat bargains to be had at the end of the trading day. Following the tour we can go for a hot drink and breakfast- perhaps a full English breakfast or a sandwich!
This will be a great opportunity for those Christmas purchases. The tours leave promptly so do be on time at 6.30am and remember to bring your camera- it’s a unique opportunity to photograph inside a meat market .
To find out about future tours follow us on Eventbrite. There will be plenty more!
